Justice Nathan Musa, the Acting Chief Judge of Adamawa, on August 2 released 67 inmates as part of the state government's efforts to de-congest inmates in some prisons across the state.
While addressing the inmates in Yola Musa Justice Musa, who is also the Chairman of the Committee on Prisons de-congestion, informed the release was part of the committee's mandate. He urged those released unconditionally to consider themselves lucky and see their freedom as an opportunity to go into the society as reformed persons. Justice Musa warned them against indulging in criminal activities that could send them back to captivity.
The Acting Chief Judge of Adamawa also told the newsmen that another 16 inmates were released on bail by the committee.
“At Yola Prisons in Yola South Local Government, a total of 39 inmates were discharged and acquitted unconditionally while 10 others were released on bail.
“At the Jimeta Prison, 28 inmates have regained freedom while six others were released on bail,” Musa said.
Musa said that the committee had concluded plans to organise capacity building for Area Court judges and magistrates in the state to enhance effective dispensation of justice at all levels.
He blamed prolonged detention of suspects in the delay in hearing cases as the main factor responsible for the congestion of prisons, which the committee was set up to address.
